Tomatoes

My four favorite flavors are as follows: Lemon, Pepper, Eggs and Tomatoes. I search for at least one of these flavors in each dish I eat. Seeing as tomatoes are one of the four, I value them very much and place them very highly on the food pedestal. To show this I will say, I eat 2 eggs, one piece of toast and a handfull of cherry tomatoes for breakfast most mornings. I will add a bit of mixed greens or an avocado or chicken or something like that to spice it up, but the basis of my breakfast each day starts with a tomato.

So I of course, am on an ongioing quest to find, prepare and eat tomatoes in the best way possible always.

Rule No. 1

Salt your tomatoes

Salting your tomatoes can be a game changer. It enhances the flavor and improves the texture. Salting your tomatoes before putting them on a sandwich can remove excess moisture, making it so your sandwich does not get soggy. Salting your tomatoes just minutes before using them will ensure a less watery, more intensley flavored fruit.

Rule No. 2

Consume during peak season

Of course I eat tomatoes all of the time but the real time to take a one way ticket to tomato town is may through october, or tomato season. Get them from your local farmers market if possible, they should not be too expensive during peak season.

*I reccomend growing your own tomatoes as well. Just two cherry tomato plants can yeild at least 200 tomatoes per season, but often it is much more. Here are some pictures of my grandmas cherry tomato plants this month.

Cherry tomato plants are the best tomato plants for entry level gardeners, while other tomato plants like Heirloom tomatoes are much harder due to their succeptibility to diseases and great size.

Rule No. 3

Use specific tomatoes for specific uses

There are over 10,000 known tomato varieties, though it can be boiled down to a simpler couple of classifications. Im not saying you have to use all of them! but knowing which to use when can really elevate your dish.

ex. use heirloom or beefsteak tomatoes on a sandwich, use cherry or grape tomatoes in a salad, use roma tomatoes in a sauce, the list goes on.

Why doe??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Every tomato is different. Different sweetness, different size, different texture, the list goes on. In these differences, one tomato can be perfect for a much different use than another tomato.

Heirloom tomatoes are perfect for sandwiches, open-faced or closed. This due to their size and complex flavor. Heirloom tomatoes are also very colorful and great main pieces of a dish.
